Seems today is Pi day - when the date (in US mm-dd-yy format) forms the first 5 significant digits of the mathematical constant pi. More commonly written as π this is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. 3.1415. And approximately 9:26:53 AM is said to be the most appropriate time of day to celebrate it: 3.141592653 - according to the Wikipedia...

Without π, many of the complex calculations that go into making the glass in today's sophisticated lenses would not be possible. Nor would most of the other technology that underpins the modern world. And it will be another 100 years before the calendar lines up again with such accuracy. So enjoy it while you may! :-)
