Three photographers are among eight editorial staff at risk of redundancy at the Manchester Evening News and Huddersfield Daily Examiner.

In a tough financial environment dedicated news photographers, especially at local level, are an easy way to reduce overheads.

It is hard on press photographers but the dedicated photographer in local news rooms is fast becoming extinct for the simple reason that digital cameras, and even cameras on phones, are now so good that photos taken by non photographers are now 'good enough'.

Take a look at these photos taken today by a Rochdale Online reporter who hasn't a clue about photography and you will see, good enough is quite sufficient to 'tell the story':
