it occured to me today, not for the first time.probably not even for the 21st time if im honest, that photography in the pure sense of the word is being superceded by digital art/manipulation.in fact id go as far as to say that photo-manipulation is fast becoming the new rock n roll.
fair enough,i have no desire to inhibit the progress of technology.
the "photographers" that have adapted to and invested heavily into this fast evolving medium are no doubt astute and techno savvy.
it would appear to be popular amongst many models.
a brief exchange on a recently uploaded image comments section has confirmed this to me.
i will say here and now that im probably a dinosaur.i like my music played on real instruments and
i like my photographs to come from a camera with the minimum fiddling around, wether in an attempt to achieve "perfection" ,hide errors or to enhance.im sad like that lol.
there is a place for it and of course in this modern age we are simply using the latest tools available to complete the job efficiently.
fair enough you may say and i cant disagree in that context.
i do feel however that because such a large part of what is being uploaded here now is what i would call digital art/photo-manipulation,given how poplular it is then perhaps it should be given not just its own category as it currently is,but it should be given its own dedicated section.this will unfortunately stray slightly into the starred image issue again.i do not wish to start a whole new argument about that at all.
its clear its popular.its clear many models like it,possibly because they enjoy the way they can be displayed/portrayed,either in a fantasy image or as a flawless creation.
thats fine.
but why not have a dedicated upload section and allow pure photography as us traditionalists might call it continue to upload side by side.
im aware this is a model hosting site,
therefore it exists for networking with models,i know its not a photographers exibition site, but i believe unless "real" photography is able to survive several things will happen.
1) models will only believe that any images of them will be flawless perfection.
2)photographers that tend to stay more traditional will get no work.
judging by how many home page images recently fall into what i would call this new technically assisted genre,it also seems that the selectors are fast becoming influenced as well.
i do not wish to start a war between the technos and the dinosaurs.nobody is right or wrong.im just suggesting an acknowledgment that this is happening and perhaps a section where one can view "photographs" and a section where one can view "the rest".
either that or a 50% split on selecting for home page.
*perfect example, ive just viewed an image on AvB of a model with a rope dragging what can only be described as a "digital elephant"
good grief ive seen it all now lol
