Mike Lancaster

I am a professional photographer based in Leeds, UK. I’ve been shooting to improve since January 2018, though I’ve had a camera a little while longer. I like to think I create visual art that provokes thought and emotion but I’ll leave that up to you to decide. I want to work with like-minded creatives and collaborate on exciting new ideas, recreating old ones with a twist and having fun whilst doing so.

?I stumbled upon photography by accident. I used to make videos of my escapades in a different hobby. A friend suggested I purchase a camera instead of a mobile phone upgrade to enable me to up production quality. I took his advice and purchased an entry level DSLR. I fired off a few shots of my kids and was a little underwhelmed. The quality just didn’t appear to be there. I thought I had made a mistake. I joined a couple of Facebook groups and went trawling for information and advice. Someone offered me a 50mm f/1.8 lens for a knockdown price so I decided to give it a try. Five to ten pictures later I was hooked. I think I’ve made maybe two videos since!

?I tried to run before I could walk and thought I knew it all. Suffice to say, some great constructive critique made me realise what I thought was good was in fact terribly poor. Since that day I’ve knuckled down and tried to improve every time I shoot. Researching and practising new techniques, playing with lighting configurations and trying to find my own niche style. I’m not sure I’ve settled on it yet but I definitely have a penchant for bodyscape and mono images. Hopefully my portfolio shows them to be of a good standard.

Rates/Payment

I shoot on a collaborative or paid basis alongside models, with like minded creatives who can bring something to the table. A TFP shoot is a collaboration in my mind and I want models to have an input and be able to contribute, otherwise one side is doing all the work whilst the other benefits.

At the end of a shoot, I give you the camera to look through everything taken and show you how to delete anything you think doesn't suit the agreed upon concept or shows too much. This gives you the peace of mind that everything is above board, though I will definitely haggle on the weird faces and mid blinks to try and use as future bargaining chips for more shoots hah. During this time you can note down any favourites and I like to try and return one or two as soon as I can, to give you something for social media etc. BTS and back of camera shots are more than welcome for Instagram and other platforms, just ask first.

I shoot in either 2 or 3 hour slots and provide between 5-10 retouched images in return for your time. If the shoot is absolutely amazing and we get a larger number of keepers, I'm more than happy to provide more but will only edit and hand over shots I'm personally happy with my name being attached to.

Paid shoot returns are negotiable.

I like to cover multiple styles on each shoot, so will start with a couple of headshots/portraits to warm up and get used to interacting with the model, move on to fashion and then as the shoot progresses if the levels call for it, will move on to lingerie/bodyscape etc. Allowing the model time to relax and stay within their comfort levels.

As mentioned above, bodyscape and tasteful art nude are perhaps my favourite genres and are those I think I perform best at but I'm willing to entertain ideas across the board, so I'm definitely not a nudey only kinda guy, which I hope my portfolio shows.
